Protest Prints

2020, Print Design

Inspired by Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, these posters and accompanying postcards were created to underscore the film’s central theme of racism and its powerful representations of blackness. The events of the movie take place over the hottest day of the summer with the sweltering heat largely visualized through yellows, reds, oranges, and earth tones. These warm colors also work to express the community’s intense emotions, highlighting the underlying hate and racial tension that is present amongst the characters. Paying homage to this use of color, these prints apply a similar palette to playful Afro-centric patterns and extract several quotations from the film: “Boycott Sal’s,” “Fight the Power,” and “We’re Still Standing.”
